United Association of Plumbers, Fitters, Welders, and HVAC Service Techs Local 396 (Apps accepted Sep 1 to Mar 31)
Our facility is dedicated to training both our experienced journeymen through upgrade classes as well as the next generation through our 5-year Apprenticeship Program. Staying on the cutting edge of industry standards and learning new technology is a never ending process here at UA Local 396. The JATC of Local 396 has outlined a rigorous five-year Apprentice Training Program that leads to Building Trades Journeyman status. Each apprentice works during the day (when available) and attends school at night. Local 396 is part of the United Association of Plumbers, Fitters, Welders, and HVAC Service Techs. We proudly work in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull Counties in Ohio and the Grant District in Hancock County, West Virginia.
To apply, you MUST follow these steps:
Step 1 – Review the information on the apprenticeship homepage.
Step 2 – Complete the online application, upload your state ID and high school transcripts or GED and submit it.https://ualocal396.org/application/
Step 3 – After your application, state I.D., and transcripts have been submitted and reviewed by LU 396 JATC you will receive a notification by email or U.S. mail explaining when you are scheduled to take the aptitude test. The Aptitude exam for this year’s applicants will be held on Friday, April 14 from 8:00 am till noon.
Step 4 – Following the aptitude test you will receive notification of your score by U.S. mail. If you obtain a 70% or higher score on the aptitude test you will be eligible to advance to the interview process. All applicants that receive a 70% or higher will receive another notification by email or U.S. mail with the time they must appear for their interview.
Step 5 – Following the interview each applicant will be placed on the Ranking List based on their overall score from the application process.
Step 6 – All applicants on the Ranking List will be reviewed by the JATC and the number of new apprentices will be chosen based on the Local’s need for manpower. You will receive a notification following the interview notifying you of your placement on the ranking list and whether or not you have been accepted into this year’s class.
*If you do not make it into this year’s class you will remain on the “Ranking List” as an alternate for two years past the interview date.

Requirements
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED FROM SEPTEMBER 1 THROUGH MARCH 31
All applicants must meet the minimum qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Must have high school diploma or equivalent GED
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of an apprentice
High School Students:
Applications may be filled out and submitted if you are age 17 but will remain pending until your high school diploma has been obtained and you are 18 years of age. You are permitted to take the aptitude test in the spring before you graduate.

If you obtain a 70% or higher score on the aptitude test you will be eligible to advance to the interview process. All applicants that receive a 70% or higher will receive another notification by email or U.S. mail with the time they must appear for their interview.

Step 7 – All applicants excepted will be required to take a drug screen and physical administered by On Demand Occupational Health in Austintown.
Step 8 – Pending the results from the drug screen, new apprentices will meet at Local 396 on Wednesday, May 18 to fill out paperwork.
